In the past, people bought a whole house \u2014 and landlords bought entire buildings to rent out apartments. Apartments were for renters, not &#8220;owners.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Condos and apartment ownership only became popular in the 1960s, pushed by developers and banks once homes got too expensive. Instead of owning land, people were sold the illusion of ownership \u2014 a unit in the sky, with HOA fees, rules, and zero real power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not ownership.
