Before the United States became a country, the American colonies were ruled by King George III, who lived thousands of miles away in Britain.

The colonists didn’t overthrow or remove the king directly. Instead, they broke away from his rule and declared independence.

The population was divided. Many people and a significant number of colonial leaders supported independence (the Patriots), while others remained loyal to the king (the Loyalists). This led to a conflict that was partly a civil war within the colonies.

Britain sent troops across the Atlantic to try to maintain control, which was difficult due to the long distance, cost, and slow communication.

The American side succeeded for several reasons:

Enough influential leaders supported independence

They were organized locally

Britain faced major logistical challenges fighting a war far from home

The king was never overthrown, he remained the ruler of Britain after the war. Over time, Britain accepted the independence of the United States following the Treaty of Paris.

The British monarch continued to plan on how to take back the land of the US even to this day.
