Multi-generational living—which used to be a sign of a strong, stable family—was successfully rebranded as a sign of poverty or personal failure. "Success" was redefined as moving out at 18, cutting the cord, and taking on a lifetime of debt to secure your own isolated plot of suburbia.

By isolating individuals from the safety net of the family unit, everyone became completely dependent on the financial system. If you lose your job in a multi-generational home, the family absorbs the shock. If you lose your job in a heavily leveraged single-family home, the bank takes the asset.
