Two interesting points from the 'nostr.band' relay/website information about the relay.

a) "90% of followers of popular accounts are bots/spam"

This is no different than X. The issue here is that there is no 1st line of defence spam protection from the user side. The solution here is when you click on "follow" someone. You would be required to pay 1 Satoshi or less. That would dramatically cut down spam as it would make it too expensive to send massive follow requests from bots. I can think of many other spam protections but the one above is a big one. Allowing anyone to follow you without spam protection will turn nostr into the garage site that we call X. Why is there very little humans on X? because it's garbage and no organic interaction so it drives real humans away. It's literally just bots and a small tiny of minority of real humans that think X is full of real people. X talked about requiring 1 dollar simply to register but the issue is X only does credit cards and other payment processers. The future is Bitcoin not credit cards.

b) "The relay is free for now"

I have said in the past that every action will be charged using Bitcoin mirco-transactions mSats. A pure capitalist system where nothing is free. This would allow the relays to receive mSats. Receiving mSats from 1 user isn't a lot but combined from all users it's enough to pay for server costs, development and more. I can't imagine programming something this massive. It would require a big team, talent and intelligence. Not an easy task but most importantly it would completely destroy spam.

Money fixes everything as long as that monetary system is not corrupt and currently Bitcoin has not been corrupted.

It's interesting to see nostr evolve. We are quite early in nostr just like we are still early in Bitcoin.

It will be easy to combat spam using Bitcoin. I do think the future developers need to get into the mindset of capitalism and not the current mindset of socialism where they want and are trying to keep everything free for everyone.

I see great potential for nostr inspite of the current drawbacks.
