I never understood why, in Canada and most of the U.S., convenience stores are built with poor safety and security measures. They also allow customers to freely roam around the store searching for items, which gives bad actors an opportunity to steal. The security for employees is often too relaxed as well. Many convenience stores lack booths or barriers to protect their workers from potential criminals.

In the U.S., you can carry a gun for protection, but if convenience stores were redesigned like those in South America, you wouldn’t even need to use one. After all, who really wants to get into a gunfight?

I prefer the South American model, where large steel bars separate the employees from customers, and the employees retrieve the items for you. The only thing missing would be a gun behind the counter and bulletproof glass behind the bars for added protection.

No matter how safe your neighborhood is, always prioritize the safety of your employees.
