The USA is Not a Nation Under God
“One Nation Under God” was not in the original Pledge of Allegiance. The original version, written in 1892, was:
“I pledge allegiance to my Flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
In 1954, President Eisenhower and Congress added “under God” to distinguish the U.S. from “godless” communism, particularly the Soviet Union. The modified version became:
“I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.”
This change was heavily influenced by religious groups, particularly the Knights of Columbus, as part of an effort to frame America as a Christian nation during the Cold War.
However, critics argue that this change blurred the line between church and state, contradicting the First Amendment’s principle of religious freedom.
The Contradiction of a “Nation Under God”
Many Americans believe their country has a divine purpose, often linking it to religious ideals. However, this belief clashes with the nation’s history of wars, interventions, and civilian casualties.
A country that claims to be “under God” while engaging in endless wars raises deep ethical and philosophical questions.
By most religious standards, a truly God-fearing nation would prioritize peace, justice, and humanitarian values—not militarism and global dominance. This contradiction suggests that the phrase “under God” is more of a political tool than a true guiding principle.
Religion vs. Government
I want to be clear: My issue is not with religion itself. I believe that most religions, when followed correctly, promote peace.
However, I strongly believe that government and religion should remain separate. The phrase “under God” does not belong in the Pledge of Allegiance.
Of course, removing it would be politically impossible, as many Americans have been deeply indoctrinated into believing that religion and patriotism must go hand in hand. Ironically, many of these same people do not even live by true religious values.
This leads me to conclude that the USA was never truly a Christian nation to begin with. The phrase “under God” was pushed as a political agenda rather than a reflection of genuine religious commitment.
Personally, I prefer the original Pledge of Allegiance—before religion was injected into it.
