Since the rise of YouTube and the internet, people around the world have been led to believe they can build a “career” through platforms like YouTube. However, the truth is that YouTube has always been more of a propaganda machine than a genuine opportunity for most. Only a small percentage of channels can manage to build a career on the platform, and many of these creators are actually hired by YouTube or other organizations to push specific agendas or narratives.
If you’re an ordinary person, not part of this inner circle, the odds are stacked against you. Making a career out of YouTube is extremely difficult, and if you manage to gain a large following, but start discussing topics that challenge the dominant narrative especially politics, you’re likely to face censorship. YouTube doesn’t tolerate channels that contradict the approved narrative. If you don’t play by their rules, you’ll be shut down. The platform doesn’t even need to rely on independent creators anymore—they have their own stable of content creators pushing the agenda they want.
In the past, it was easier to make money from a YouTube channel. But fast forward to 2024, YouTube has completely overhauled its monetization system, making it much harder for creators to earn a living. Despite this, the propaganda continues to spread, misleading creators into thinking YouTube is still a viable platform to build a career.
The notion that you can build a sustainable career from YouTube has always been a myth, and it remains so today. This same kind of deception can be seen on platforms like X, where the narrative persists that people can make a “living” from the platform. It’s all part of the same broader effort to make us believe that we can rely on entertainment-driven platforms as a primary source of income.
The reality is that YouTube and similar platforms are primarily focused on propaganda, entertainment, not productivity or necessity. It’s not like food, shelter, or clothing—basic needs that drive a career. As a result, building a career on YouTube is inherently difficult and unsustainable for most creators.
But can Nostr change this? I believe so. The key difference with Nostr is that the monetization system is decentralized, controlled directly by the users, and not dictated by a company with its own corporate interests. Money flows directly to content creators, allowing them to earn a fairer share of the revenue they generate. Unlike YouTube, Nostr doesn’t have a central authority controlling who gets paid and how much, giving creators more autonomy and potential for financial success.
This model could lead to a more equitable distribution of wealth. Instead of a few creators claiming the millions of dollars that YouTube often touts, we’re likely to see a greater spread of earnings across many smaller creators. This means more content creators will have the chance to earn money, rather than a select few being disproportionately rewarded.
So hang in there, content creators. Don’t lose hope. The landscape is changing, and while the path to success may look different than it did a few years ago, opportunities are emerging that are more fair and sustainable. Keep pushing forward.
