I’m tired of gaming controllers not having enough buttons. So, I designed my own concept controller.
It’s inspired by the N64 controller, mainly because I loved the yellow C-buttons. I always found them super useful—I could map them to things like bows, guns, or quick items, giving me fast and easy access during gameplay. For me, that setup worked perfectly in most games.
I’ve created two concept designs:
Concept 1 has two main action buttons (A and B) along with the four yellow C-buttons, just like the Nintendo 64 controller.
Concept 2 has four main action buttons (A, B, X, and Y), plus the four C-buttons—giving you more input options than most current controllers.
Is it too many buttons? I don’t think so. More buttons mean more options and customization, which is great for players who like to tweak their controls.
I’ve also color-coded each button with a different color. I find colors much more helpful—when a game shows you which button to press, it’s easier to remember a color than a letter. In fact, I’ve removed the letters entirely. Letters can be confusing, especially since different consoles use different layouts.
Instead, I think it would be great to include stickers so players can label the buttons however they want—or even better, design an easy way to change the button colors, giving players full control over how they look and function.
The only real challenge I see is hand size. Some people have small hands, others have larger ones. To solve that, I propose releasing two sizes of the controller: one for smaller hands and one for larger hands.
Personally, I prefer the second concept. You can never have too many buttons, right?
Which one do you like better?
