YouTube sucks for making money.

The PartneredYoutube subreddit is full of sad stories from YouTubers trying—and failing—to make a living. They’ve experimented with subscriber-only content, Patreon, Buy Me a Coffee, VPNs and countless other monetization strategies. But most of them don’t work.

Why? Because the average person has no interest in paying $5 to $20 per month per channel. That’s an absurd subscription model. YouTube’s system favors big creators financed by corporations and leaves everyone else searching for scraps.

A better model would be something like Nostr’s “zap” tipping system—where viewers can send small Bitcoin tips directly to creators they enjoy. This keeps content free, removes the paywall friction, and lets creators actually get rewarded for individual pieces of content, not just popularity.

Will it make you a millionaire? Probably not. Making a living off YouTube is unrealistic—even on a Bitcoin standard. But the Bitcoin tipping model is far more sustainable, fair, and better aligned with how people actually consume content online.
