I’ve noticed some NSFW npubs getting frustrated and quitting Nostr because their content keeps getting removed from both media servers & Blossom servers. These users come to Nostr expecting that, since it’s decentralized, they’ll be able to upload whatever they want without it getting deleted — especially given how Blossom servers are structured.
While Blossom servers sound good in theory, the reality is that the responsibility still falls on the server administrator to moderate content according to the laws of their jurisdiction. In my view, most Blossom servers will eventually go bankrupt or shut down as Nostr scales to billions of users. You simply can’t let people upload unlimited content without consequences — it’s expensive and unsustainable but for now blossom servers are good and helping Nostr grow.
I believe the right approach is exactly what Nostr build is doing: charging users for media storage. But even then, many in the NSFW crowd don’t want to follow the rules. For them, the real solution is simple: host your own media.
Nostr empowers users with more freedom — but with that comes more personal responsibility. The days of freeloading on someone else’s server are coming to an end.
